Music Intent Statement and Progression Map

Music Intent Statement

At Longhoughton CE Primary School our music curriculum intends to inspire creativity and self-expression, encouraging children on their musical journeys. We hope to foster a life-long love of music by exposing them to diverse musical experiences. Our music curriculum is designed to progressively develop children’s skills in all areas of music.

We use the Charanga music scheme of work to ensure that our learners have access to a variety of music experiences as part of the curriculum. Music lessons are cross curricular and support deep transferable skills as well as learning and understanding in a range of many other subjects including English and Mathematics.

The aims of our Music curriculum are to nurture pupils who:

  • Can sing and use their voices individually and in a group
  • Can create and compose music on their own and with others
  •  Have opportunities to learn a variety of musical instrument and play together in ensemble groups
  •  Understand and explore how music is created and shared
  •  Listen to, review and evaluate the work of great composers and musicians from a range of genres, styles, traditions and historical periods
  • Have different opportunities to take part in performances

We are proud to offer keyboard and guitar lessons as part of our extra-curricular program to give learners a range of opportunities to develop and use their musical skills.

Our whole school Christmas performance and class worships allow the children to showcase their musical creativity.
