26.04.24 The Princess and the Pea

26.04.24

This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘The Snail and The Whale’ by Julia Donaldson. One tiny snail longs to see the world and hitches a lift on the tail of a whale. Together they go on an amazing journey, past icebergs and volcanoes, sharks and penguins, and the little snail feels so small in the vastness of the world. But when disaster strikes and the whale is beached in a bay, it's the tiny snail who saves the day.

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus was the traditional story ‘The Princess and The Pea’. a prince wishes to marry a princess, but he wants to make sure she is a real princess, rather than one of the dozens of royal pretenders who appear to inhabit the realm. He goes on an extensive search to find his royal bride, but he cannot be completely sure that any of the women he meets are bona fide princesses.

This week our rainbow challenges have been:

Maths – add the 2 different amounts together to find the total using a 10s frame

Fine motor – cut the different labels to match the different parts of the whale

Literacy – look at the picture and write a caption to match
Funky fingers – manipulate the numicon to make a snail shape
Creative – cut out the different parts and reconstruct them to make a whale
Phonics – cut and stick the sounds to make words to match the pictures
ICT – Match the ladybird spots
Ladybird Spots - Counting, Matching and Ordering game (topmarks.co.uk)

In maths this week Reception have been continuing to use 10’s frames to support them when they have been adding 2 single digit numbers and also when taking away during Ten Town sessions.  During the afternoon we have been looking at tangrams once again and rearranging different 2D shapes to make a series of different images. We have been investigating which shapes tesselate and also reminding ourselves about the different properties they have and whether we can see similarities between them.

Nursery have been using positional language during their maths sessions. They have been using different vocabulary to describe where objects are in relation to other objects; in or out, on or under and in front of behind.

This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘One Elephant Went out to Play’ which can be found at the following link; Bing Videos

In Read Write Inc phonics this week Reception have continued to work in our 2 separate groups with Mrs Whaley and Miss Campbell. The focus has been practicing reading a combination a real and alien words using sounds and special friend sounds they have learnt during the past few weeks. The children have been using these sounds during ‘Drawing Cub’ when writing simple sentences to answer the focus questions based around the story we have been reading this week and extending their ideas where they can. The children are really eager to write all their different ideas and are making great progress with their writing using the skills they are developing in their phonics sessions.

Nursery have continued with Read Write Inc this week in preparation for September. Each day the children have looked at a new sound (inpgo) and explored different objects which start with the same initial sound. Each sound has had a different story to listen to and everyone has had a go at mark making to write the sounds using the different rhymes. The children have also been listening to Mrs Archer ‘Fred Talk’ some words using the sounds they learnt last week to try and listen to the sounds to be able to recognise and say the word. This takes lots of practice and is something the children will be doing over the next few weeks as they learn more sounds. These can be sound at; https://www.tetney.lincs.sch.uk/_documents/%5B536133%5DRWInc_Letters_and_Rhymes.pdf The children in Nursery will only be focusing on single Set 1 sounds and this is something that will be revisited in September once the children are grouped depending on their ability as Read Write Inc aims to support children to learnt to read as quickly as possible once they are ready.

As part of our ongoing RE work and looking at ‘Gods Creation’ we looked at our planet Eart on Google Earth to see where we are. We looked at where the land parts were and also the different vast amounts of water. Linking to our story of ‘The Snail and the Whale’ we also watched some of Blue Planet and saw different whales in their natural habitat.

On Tuesday it was St George’s Day so we listened to the famous story George and the Dragon linked to our class saint St Gorge. We also coloured in pictures which linked to the story, designed shields and decorated flags to celebrate the day which English people celebrate on the same day each year.

Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is ‘TITCH’ by Pat Hutchins and our ‘Drawing Club’ story is the original animation of ‘Bill and Ben’ The Flower Pot Men.
