01.03.24 Dear Zoo

01.03.24

This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘The Zoo Vet’ which is a TWINKL original story.  We meet the vet who is looking after the animals who need looking after as they have all come down with something that is making them poorly and it is the vets job to make them feel better.

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus was the familiar story ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell. In this story we discover the animals the zoo has sent – a monkey, a lion and even an elephant! But will they ever manage to send the perfect pet?

This week our rainbow challenges have been:

Maths – cut and stick and sort the 3D shapes

Fine motor – safari colour by number

Literacy – ‘my favourite zoo animal is……………………’

Funky fingers – use the gem to show which 3D shape matches the picture

Creative – make a lion mask using the different coloured strips of yellow and orange

Phonics – say it, join it, write it (4 sound words)

ICT – read as many words as you can in 90 seconds https://ictgames.com/mobilePage/helpAHedgehog/index.html

In maths this week Reception have been consolidating their learning and revisiting topics they still need some practice at. The activities this week have included; sorting zero/not zero, composition of 5, ordering by height and matching numbers to their quantities up to 10.

Nursery have also ben consolidating their learning from previous weeks and have been revisiting recognising numerals to 5, counting out objects to match up to 5 and also recognising quantities up to 5 quickly without counting which is called subitising.

This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘Sing a Song of Sixpence’’ which can be found at the following link; Sing A Song Of SixPence with Lyrics | LIV Kids Nursery Rhymes and Songs | HD (youtube.com)

In Read Write Inc phonics this week Reception have been in their new groups based on the assessments Miss Sheridan completed last half term. The children in ‘red group’ with Mrs Whaley have been working in partners using pointing sticks to point to sounds and words for their partner to read. They have been still working with Set 1 sounds, especially special friends but this half term we will focus on reading words with 4 or more sounds as we become more confident. Miss Campbell’s group have been learning more of Set 2 sounds and have been thinking about using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops independently when writing.

We have had a great time playing in our new role play zoo and have enjoyed pretending to be lots of different animals. We have taken it in turns to be visitors, gift shop keepers and having the opportunity to take lots of notes which has been great for independent mark making and writing.

On Thursday we enjoyed being outside in our garden and spotted some signs of spring as the daffodils have started to poke through the grass. We enjoyed exploring the water troughs and building with the crates and planks and make different ‘cages’ for a range of different animals from ‘Dear Zoo’.

We are really looking forward to our trip to Northumberland Zoo next Wednesday with St Patrick class and we have written a list ofall the different animals we expect to see there.

Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is ‘Monkey Puzzle’ by Julia Donaldson and our ‘Drawing Club’ story is the traditional tale of the ‘3 Billy Goats Gruff’.
