16.05.25 The Very Hungry Caterpillar
16.05.25
This week our ‘Super Six’ and ‘Drawing Club’ story was the classic story tale of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. We have retold the story using the days of the week as a focus and pretended to be the caterpillar and tasted all the food from the story.
This week our rainbow challenges have been:
Maths – fill in the missing caterpillar numbers
Fine motor – cut and stick life cycle of a butterfly
Literacy – write a caption about ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’
Funky fingers – complete the repeated caterpillar patterns
Creative – paint one side of the butterfly to make a symmetrical pattern
Phonics – write the labels to match the picture
ICT – find the missing numbers in the caterpillar sequence
In maths this week Reception been talking about odd and even numbers. We have used the Numicon shapes to help us decide which numbers are odd and even up to 10. These manipulatives have been really useful in supporting the children to give reasoning as to which are odd and even as the odd number shapes have a ‘sticking up’ ‘odd’ part to them.
During our nursery rhyme time this week we have been singing ‘Humpty Dumpty Sat on a Wall’ which can be found using this link: Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall - BBC Bitesize
In phonics this week Reception have been working in their new Read Write Inc. groups. Nursery have continued to learn new sounds their Read Write Inc. phonics with Mrs Archer and have learnt the first 15 sounds m a s d t i n p g o c k u b f. They have been using these sounds to make words using the magnetic boards and also have started to read some words using these sounds on the flashcards.
On Tuesday it was all very exciting in school. We were able to sample the new menu from the Pele Trust – everyone said the chicken katsu curry and Napoli pasta was “delicious”.
In our RE lesson this week we listened to the story about ‘The Creation Story’ from the Bible and talked about how God made the world in just 6 important days and had a well deserved rest on the 7th day which was a Sunday. We talked about lots of different creatures and animals he made and which ones were our favourites and why.
Next week our core text is ‘The Giant Jam Sandwich’ by John Vernon Lord linking in with our minibeast topic. We will be doing a very exciting experiment to see if we can attract any minibeasts and insects by leaving out a jar of jam!
