10.03.23 Six Dinner Sid
10.03.23
This week our ‘Super Six’ focus story was ‘Six Dinner Sid’ by Inga Moore. This book has been very popular with the class as they have really enjoyed talking about Sid’s character and the mischief he got up to throughout the week on Aristotle Street.
Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus story has been the traditional tale of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Even though we all have read this story before the children have really enjoyed joining in with the repeated refrains in the text “trip trap trip trap over the wooden bridge’ and we have also enjoyed making our own bridges from the different types of construction . Our new vocabulary words have been; triple, suddenly, bamboozle and gruesome.
This week our rainbow challenges have been:
Literacy – read the words using the phonics buttons and cut and stick to match the animal picture
Maths – sort the measuring snakes in size order from longest to shortest
Fine motor – cut and stick the days of the week into the right order
Funky fingers – use the tweezers to count out the right number of 1p coins to match the number on the animals
Number – count the number of different images in the picture and write the total
Phonics – read and sort the words into the different rhyming groups e.g. frog, dog, log etc.
ICT – look at the price for each item and count out the matching number of 1p coins
In phonics this week we have started working in our new Read Write Inc groups across the school with children working at the same level. During these sessions we have specific sounds we work through as well as reading words which contain these sounds and having the opportunity to write them. We are also beginning to look at the structure of a sentence and talking about capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
In Maths this week Reception have started to explore the numbers 9 and 10. We have talked about the ways the numbers can be made up from 2 different numbers as well as thinking about the numbers which are 1 more and 1 less. We have been singing lots of counting songs up to 10 and back again and have had a go at ordering numbers from 10-0.
Nursery has been exploring the number 5 and collecting different items to total 5 from around the classroom. The have also been focusing on the initial sounds; c, s, d, o and p and naming different things which start with this sound and finding these around the classroom.
Last week we celebrated World Book Day as a whole school. We came to school in a book character or our pajamas. We enjoyed looking through the picture books from the school library in a cosy den which was made in St Thomas classroom. We also had a treat of hot chocolate and marshmallows. Well done to Grace who won the best costume prize for St George class as she dressed up as the witch from ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. We tried to read as many books as possible that the children brought in from home and it was a really good day to celebrate reading and literature.
Next week our ‘super six’ story is ‘The Zoo Vet’ which is a TWINKL story. We are also going to be learning about being a vet and all the important jobs they have to do and all the different things you fin in a vets surgery. It is also ‘Science Week’ next week so we are going to go and showcase our learning in the hall to the rest of school and practice speaking in front of an audience.
