Y6 Residential Visit to Ford Castle
After working hard during SATs week, the Year 6 children packed their bags and set off for a trip to Ford Castle. We travelled up by coach ready for lots of exciting activities. We arrived in glorious sunshine and then took our bags up to our rooms in the old part of the castle, sitting outside for our picnic lunch before taking part in the first activity of the day. Working as part of a team we had to solve a variety of different problems and puzzles. After this we tried our hand at fencing-“On guard!” Our final activity of the afternoon was the assault course which involved carrying wellies full of water around various obstacles. After tea we competed against other schools on more problem solving tasks before going to bed in our dorms.
When we woke up on day two, we were disappointed to see it was raining, but this didn’t stop us from having an action packed day. After breakfast our first activity was archery, followed by a search and rescue task, where we had to locate a casualty, administer first aid and then work as a team to carry them to safety. The final activity of the morning was a favourite – a zip wire ride with a 90ft drop to the river below.
After lunch it was time to put on the harnesses ready for some climbing activities. First was crate stacking which involved working as a team to build the highest column of crates we could, whilst standing on the top attached to ropes. Next was the postman’s walk- which involved negotiating a series of bridges and tightropes that got increasingly higher and ended in a death defying leap to the ground ( whilst attached to a safety harness). Finally, in the night challenge we put on blackout goggles and had to walk with our hands on the shoulder of the person in front as a guide, following the voice of the instructor. He led us to an obstacle course which we had to complete by listening and touching only. The end to a fantastic day was the disco in the grand hall.
We ended our residential trip with team building games and shelter building in the woodlands surrounding the castle before getting on the coach back to school.
